Dumaguete City Smart City Project
Photo is a Stock Image and is not the Project Perspective
Ok. .so last week, the Facebook Page of Yes The Best Dumaguete posted a proposed city project that looked like a rendered drawing from a newly graduated Engineering student.

The post was about a project of the City of Dumaguete to reclaim 174 hectares of the ocean that is dubbed to be as "Smart City" that will cost 25-Billion pesos.

When I first read the post, I thought it was just a hypothetical project that will happen in the distant future. But apparently today, the heads of Silliman University circulated a public petition opposing the reclamation.

Then I thought. .wow. .since the University issued a petition, this project is not hypothetical.

And there’s actually a plan that would cost the City’s natural resources.

Now, here is my personal opinion about the project.

It's a painful reality that in the process of progress, nature gets sacrificed. But this idea to even materialize in the City today is just a huge source of disappointment.

We are embarking on this large project for Dumaguete when the City has not even resolved pending and cheaper concerns.

The following are some of the issues that need to be resolved in the present that requires immediate attention:

  • Dumaguete has no clear direction of its new Sanitary Landfill
  • Dumaguete has a problem with its water Supply
  • Dumaguete streets are congested during peak hours
  • Dumaguete has an ineffective drainage system that will clog up during rains

Even if the city will argue that the project is free, the feeling of disappointment is there. The Dumaguete City officials could have used their energy in looking for free solutions for the more pressing concerns of Dumaguete.

If they were able to negotiate a project that would cost 25 Billion pesos for free, why can’t they do the same for the Sanitary Landfill and the Dumaguete Water Supply?

These two issues alone, if resolved, can bring more comfort to the residents of the City of Gentle People, rather than building a lavish coastline.

I do hope that there is still a way to put this project on hold, and the City Officials of Dumaguete City can focus more on the present and more important concerns.
